YAB Open House 2003

Youth Advisory Board

YAB is a group of high school students, college students, and artists from diverse communities throughout the Bay Area.  YAB serves as a task force to empower youth through arts advocacy, events and workshops.  Southern Exposure teaches YAB members to use art as a community-building tool and provides them with a space to create their own events and have their collective voices heard.

All Youth Advisory Board projects are youth initiated and produced. In the past, YAB has successfully produced its launch party, a screening of youth produced film and video, an all-day youth event featuring performers, artwork, and activities by other exemplary arts programs, and they have curated a youth art exhibition. YAB is currently working on creating a youth arts and culture website that will guide young people through the world of culture producers of the Bay Area.

GOALS

  • To expand the scope of Southern Exposure's programming by planning and executing youth events, such as art exhibits, poetry readings, and video screenings.
  • To teach youth how to provide resources for other young people interested in the arts.
  • To create in-depth evaluation systems for Southern Exposure's Artists in Education Program and give youth a greater voice in the future of these programs.

www.the-ARTery.org is an online exhibition space for youth produced artwork curated by YAB members. Young people are able to access and connect with one another to discuss artwork, current events, and other issues without the obstacles of social, cultural, and geographic boundaries. the-ARTery.org is entirely youth produced by YAB members with support from the Bay Area Video Coalition (BACV) Youthlink Internship Program, and its webmaster, Gabriel Hernandez. The web site exists to create and inspire communication between young people all over the Bay Area. the-ARTery.org encourages youth to submit creative work, as well as reviews of movies, books, art shows, and music.
